This is a mantra we hear so often from our own government, so it is educative to hear it from somewhere else. The basic premise is, 'We as the sovereign government are free to do what we want'... unless it is unpopular, when we blame the EU.Thus when the German Government announce that,
"As of 1 November 2007 the law requires that fingerprints of passport applicants be taken. If applicants are not willing to have their fingerprints taken, a passport cannot be issued to them".
They make it damn sure to explain that it is of course not their fault at all but because of the EU.
"the electronic passport is part of a security policy adopted by the European Union after the attacks of 11 September 2001"
Admittedly the need for identifiers on ID cards in Germany has a dodgy history.

I might disagree with you on the 'best of all possible worlds' outcome on our relationship with our neighbours but all that would be would be would be a debate over what is achievable and what is not.
The 'beneficial crisis' is now the rallying call from parish council to the UN for something 'to be done'. I don't like trite EU-Hitler or EU-Stalin comparisons but this post is good reminder of that one true constant; the law of unintended consequences.
If Eurofanatics were willing to engage in debate this would be a fascinating time. Most, from my experience come today from a left liberal perspective that would slit their wrists rather than back a measure like this; stick the ring of stars on it and attitudes change, but more importantly the flight from debate becomes the guiding principle.

You are right of course that the illustration is a bit harsh and overdone and could have been done a little better, but... but...
