Scanning the honours list this weekend, after a bit of a prompt, I was appalled to discover that the former Secretary General of the European Parliament has been awarded the Knight Commander of the Most Distinguished Order of St Michael and St George.
Julian Priestley for it is he, (and how Sir Julian sticks in the craw) has been gifted this for apparently serving the United Kingdom's interests abroad.
Remember this is for a chap who was the first President of the Oxford Union to be overthrown due to vote rigging during the election. He then scurried over to Brussels arriveing as one of the first British civil servants. Since that time he has worked long and hard to promote the interests of the EU and the European Parliament in particular. Now that is no crime, indeed maybe he should be honoured by the EU, but it is a bit rich for him to recive this sort of recognition from the Queen when his working life has been directly antipathetic to the interests of the UK.

You forgot to mention that he stood for election on the Labour ticket in Plymouth in 1983 - losing to David Owen (then SDP). The Tory candidate was one Ann Widdecombe.
The Labour manifesto for that election contained a commitment to withdrawal from the EU.
