Well that is what Cameron seemed to be saying when he was on Heart FM this morning. According to the Standard he said,
“I think that a close race is a good thing in many ways — I think that will enliven interest in politics and make people involved,” he said. That is why the Tories have slipped to a mere 2% ahead in the polls, becaiuse dave and his strategists thought that it was just a bit dul to be 14 points up as they were a few months ago.
It is as if he is channelling Brithnoth at the Battle of Maldon,
Brithnoth himself is almost a caricature of British heroism: a man who snatched defeat from the jaws of victory by playing the game of war as if it were cricket. His permitting the Norsemen to cross the causeway is comparable to opening the castle gates to admit the enemy. But with what glorious enthusiasm he does it! - 'come swiftly to us, warriors to war.' The keynote throughout is impatience: on both sides, the men are chafing for battle. Its just that I don't see Cameron as a hero. And the importance here is not the immediate failure of the Tories but what that lack of strategy and thought implies,
The battle of Maldon in 991 was amongst the most serious of the early encounters of the campaign, and arguably the one with the most far-reaching consequences. It was subsequent to this battle, and presumably as a result of its loss, that the English began to pay large sums in tribute to the Danes.

Reminded me of a labour minister who said
"" The recession might in fact be beneficial to those made jobseeking as they will have to adopt healthier lifestyles and better diets " Ben Bradshaw
