Next week the European parliament will be passing a resolution on the 60th anniversary of VE day. It is the normal pile of high sounding words stacked upon one another desperate that all will know that the European Parliament cares. Thus the European Parliament,
"highlights the importance of keeping the memories of the past alive, because there cannot be reconciliation without remembrance;
expresses respect for and pays tribute to all victims of tyrannies;
renews its commitment to a peaceful and prosperous Europe founded on the values of respect for human dignity, freedom, democracy, equality, the rule of law and respect for human rights".
You get the idea, it would be interesting if an organisation anywhere would disagree with the sentiments, and by being so commonplace they become meaningless. However when they say that the EU,
"confirms its united stand against all totalitarian rule of whatever ideological background;"
it forgets that the EU is currently trying to sell arms to the Chinese, refused to support any attack on Saddam Hussein, is allowing the Iranians to get away with blue murder, drops sanctions against Castro's Cuba, refuses to take any useful action against Mugabe in Zimbabwe. Oh the list goes on.
Surprisingly, the report does accept that the US was involved in the ending of the war.
