I wonder if the financial fundamentals of the Nationwide bank are secure. Because otherwise, why would they be so blatantly sucking up to the European Commission.

The Nationwide is still a Building Society, not a bank (despite multiple attempts a few years back by a group of carpetbaggers to convert it and steal the members assets).
Nationwide Building Society is a British mutual financial institution, the largest building society in the world. It has its headquarters in Swindon, England, and maintains significant administration centres in Bournemouth and Northampton.

OK, fair point, but the larger issue still stands, what are they doing teaming up like this?
Building Societies can still go bust.
