"It would be bad if Switzerland wants to talk only about issues that are in its own interests and not about the concerns of the EU."This comment from the European Union's ambassador to Bern, Michael Reiterer, comes just before a meeting on Wednesday where the EU and Switzerland are to discuss the thorny issue of tax competion, (otherwise known in Brussels as 'harmful tax competition).
It has echoes of the infamous "now is a good time to shut up" and is symptomatic of the way in which the EU throws its diplomatic weight around. From my understanding of politics it is the duty of an elected official to argue from a position its own national interest. Anything else would be a betrayal.
