Go Vaika, tell it like it is

David Rennie over at his blog (thus suggesting that it wont get intothe print edition has reported on a fine extempore defence of the influence of the US by the President of Latvia, Vaika Vike-Freiberga at the Euro love in in Salzburg this weekend.
Suffice to say that she was not too pleased to be described as a danger to to the accession countries pro US stance.
Go there and read it. I shall just point out this dig at her hosts,
" Austria, by the way, came very close to being in the same situation as Latvia. Be grateful for your fate, don't complain," and with a rousing finale,
"Throughout the years, in parts of Europe, intellectuals and even politicians were enamoured with the idea of Marxism and even some thought the Soviet Union was an embodiment of what Socialism and the protection of the worker was all about. America was more realistic. America looked on us as captive nations. We were captive nations, and we are now free."
